Cleansing Your Curls With Shampoo

Mentioning shampoo to someone who has curly hair will guarantee you a mixed response.

For a while, it was thought co-washing (the act of washing your hair solely with conditioner) was the best way to cleanse textured hair. For some, this still may be the case, but with so many brands now offering shampoo’s specifically for all different kind of textured hair, we now have more choice than ever. From low poo shampoo to ones that clarify and those with some form of lather, there’s one for everyone.

Cleansing your hair is like cleansing your skin, it may require different products for different wash days, and can be affected in the same way as our skin reacts to outside factors. Weather, product build-up, hormonal changes, stress the list goes on, all can determine what our hair needs at different times.

And in the same way, the way we cleanse and prime our skin to ensure whatever goes on top looks flawless, knowing what your curls need when cleansing ensures you have the best possible base to start before styling.

Here is a list of 10 shampoo’s that offer different cleansing properties that you can reference when you’re deciding what your curls need.

Jessicurl Gentle Lather Shampoo

This shampoo is great for fine haired curlies or waves that get weighed down easily. There are no added oils or moisturisers, just gentle cleansing agents that will clean the hair but not strip it.  This gives you a creamy, luxurious lather without leaving your hair dry after use, can also be used as an alternative to harsher clarifying shampoos.

Softly cleansing the hair and scalp without drying either, Moringa Oil one of the key ingredients helps nourish the scalp while fighting dandruff, preventing split ends and strengthens hair follicles with minerals and vitamins. Curl Keeper Silk Protein Shampoo

Even though this is a shampoo I look at this as a treatment shampoo when my curls are in need of strengthening, also great to use just before a colour treatment and after. This deposits generous amounts of ingredients that are essential in rebuilding chemically damaged or colour treated hair. Concentrated amounts of panthenol and magnesium that strengthens the hair’s elasticity and Silk amino acids are added to soften and repair even the roughest hair cuticle. Getting rid of build-up is such an important part of maintaining healthy hair, and sometimes a step that some overlook.  This scrub (the granules are so super tiny you can barley feel them) penetrates through to the roots and exfoliates gently, washing off effortlessly without any residues. I also love that its charged with live pro-biotic’s, skin-friendly micro-organisms that strengthen the scalp’s protective barrier. My favourite scalp treatment by far.

When shampooing my hair I always start at the scalp, keeping the focus here for a couple of minutes making sure I massage the product in with a firm hand, its this movement that will help remove build-up from the scalp as well as the shampoo you are using. NEVER pile the rest of your curls up on to the top of your head and detangle your hair in sections to preventing pulling and breakage. Follow up with a good quality conditioner, and your curls will be prepped and primed ready to be styled.
